Why is it important to have a morning routine? Why do so many successful people rave about their morning routine?
In this post, I’ll go over the benefits of having a morning routine and how you can create one that fits your goals and lifestyle!
The way you start your morning can mean the difference between feeling stressed, anxious, and frazzled right off the bat and feeling calm, in control and productive.
Many of the most successful people in the world have a morning routine and they attribute their success in part to their routine:
- Arianna Huffington starts the day with meditation followed by exercise
- Tim Ferris has followed the same morning routine for the last 10 years and it starts with making his bed and then meditating.
- Jennifer Aniston drinks warm lemon water every morning.
- Marie Kondo gets up at 6:30 am, opens the windows to let in the fresh air, and burns incense.
- Oprah Winfrey starts her day by walking her dogs at 6 am.
Does this mean you have to get up at 5 am to start your day? No! While there is quite a lot of scientific research showing the benefits of waking up before the sun, that doesn’t mean you have to get that early.
What are the benefits of having a morning routine and what can you expect to gain from it?
Benefits of having a morning routine
1. Sets the tone for the rest of your day
Starting off your day with intention and purpose sets the tone for how your day will unfold. Hitting the snooze button several times before getting out of bed, running around the house to get dressed, and eating before rushing out the door because you’re late for work will leave you feeling like you’re constantly racing after time and stressed for the rest of the day. You can either start your day with intention or start your day with distractions.
2. Reduces stress and increases wellbeing
Taking time first thing in the morning to take care of you is a wonderful way to reduce your stress levels. Spending time feeling grateful, thinking positive thoughts, and focusing your energy on what you want to do increases your happiness and overall wellbeing.
3. Increases productivity
It is proven that people who wake up early are more productive. Implementing a morning routine makes it easy to know what you need to do during the day and you’re less likely to get distracted. Think about it, you’re adding extra time in your day to get things done! It’s no surprise that successful people have already accomplished many things before most people’s alarm goes off.
It’s also a great way to practice discipline!
4. Develops healthy habits that will carry over in your day
Implementing one good habit is a gateway for more good habits. Each task you tackle in the morning brings a sense of accomplishment you carry with you all day. Over time, you’ll find yourself adding more good habits to the rest of your day.
5. Increases mental clarity
Being mindful of how you spend the first few hours of your day brings a sense of focus and mental clarity. Working on your goals, spending time on your needs, and wants is essential to start off the day in a positive and productive way.
6. Helps avoid mental fatigue
Having to make tons of small decisions first thing in the morning leads to mental fatigue. We all have a limited amount of energy to spend during the day and each decision we make drains it. Don’t waste time or brainpower making low-level decisions. Instead, take the guesswork out of the equation and plan ahead of time.
7. Boosts your energy
Starting the day with exercise and intention instantly boosts your energy levels. This cleanses your cortisol levels, increases your dopamine and serotonin levels, and elevates your metabolism. The perfect combination to get your body in the right zone!
How to create your perfect morning routine
There is no one size fits all type of morning routine. Everyone’s routine is going to look different based on their goals, intention, and allotted time.
To create the perfect morning routine for you, here are the steps to follow:
1. Set your intention
First, think about what you want to get out of it. Do you want to be more productive? Have more time to spend on you? Get in more exercise? Think about your goals and go from there.
2. Brainstorm your ideal morning
List all of the things you’d like to do in the morning. Include all of the fundamentals (shower, brush your teeth, get dressed) and add all of the other things you’d like to do – walk the dog, meditate, exercise, read…

3. Time each task
Estimate how much time each task requires. It doesn’t have to be exact at this point. If you don’t know how long a task will take because you haven’t done it in the morning, time yourself! It’s better to allow more time than necessary for each task, that way you won’t feel stressed (which is the opposite of what we want, right?).
4. Prioritize and order your ideal morning tasks
Once you’ve listed everything you’d like to accomplish in the morning, prioritize and order them. What is a must and what is a nice to have? You probably won’t be able to do everything you jotted down in step 2 and that’s ok. Don’t try to go overboard and pack as many things as possible into your morning routine. Choose tasks that bring you closer to the goals that you determined in step 1. Next, make sure you put them in an order that makes sense to you.
5. Determine your ideal wake-up time
Start from the time you need to be out of the house and work your way back with the time slots for each task you want to accomplish. This will determine the time you should set your alarm clock. If the number you come up with scares you, see what you can take out to make it more manageable for you. If 5 am just isn’t going to happen, that’s ok! It’s better to start with a routine that you’ll be more likely to stick with instead of trying to get up at a time that isn’t going to work.
6. Set yourself up for success the night before
To avoid decision fatigue first thing in the morning, plan your morning routine the night before. For example, if exercise is part of your morning outline, set your workout close the night before by your bed. Make your breakfast the night before (chia seed pudding is my favorite breakfast and it’s packed with super nutrients!). Do what it takes to make your morning as smooth and easy as possible.
7. Go to bed early
If you have to wake up earlier than usual, you have to go to bed earlier as well! Getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep is key to having a great morning. It might seem like a given but it’s often more difficult than you think. It does take planning and discipline.
8. Test and tweak it
Test your morning routine and see if it feels right. Did you plan enough time for each task? Try it out for at least a week before making any changes. It takes time for a routine to become a habit! Be consistent, especially in the beginning. Wake up at the same time and go through the same routine every morning! Consistency is key!
